John Adams (d. 1633)

Ellen Newton (c. 1598–1681)

John Adams died in 1633, possibly in the small pox outbreak in Plymouth.

Ellen was born about 1598, based on her age at death (although it may be an exaggeration) . She was buried on 5 December 1681, age 83, in Marshfield. [1] She married second Kenelm Winslow in June 1634. [1] Kenelm, the son of Edward and Magdalen (Oliver) Winslow, was baptized on 3 May 1599 in Droitwich, Worcestershire. [2] He was buried on 13 September 1672 in Salem. [1]

John Adams came to New England in the Fortune, arriving at Cape Cod on 9 November 1621. [3, ch. 12, fn. 9] Ellen, the wife of John, is supposed to be the Ellen Newton who came of the Anne in 1623.

As a passenger in the Fortune, John received an acre of land; Ellen also received an acre. [1] John is in the sixth lot in the 1627 cattle division; his family consisted of himself, Eliner Adams and James Adams. [1]

John was one of the Plymouth purchasers. [1] He was a freeman in 1633. [1] He was taxed the minimum amount on 25 March 1633. [1]

Ellen presented an inventory of her husband's estate on 11 November 1633. The court papers name their three children, James, John, and Susan. [1]

Kenelm Winslow of Marshfield—when he married Ellenor Adams, the widow of John Adams—posted bond to pay John's son James Adams five pounds when he came of age. The payment was recorded on 26 December 1651. [1]

Kenelm made his will on 8 August 1672. He named his eldest son John, son Nathaniel, wife Elinor Winslow, son Job, daughter Ellinor, grandchild Kenelm Baker and grandchild Mary Adams. [1]
