JOHN WHITMARSH (c. 1595–1644)

ALICE GARMENT (b. c. 1599)


John Whitmarsh was probably born about 1595. He died by 1644 in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. [1][2] He married first Margaret ___ by 1623. She was buried on 12 April 1623 in Shepton Mallett, co. Somerset. [3] He married second Alice Garment on 9 June 1623 in Shepton Mallett. [3]

Alice Garment was probably born about 1599.

A record from the Archiepiscopal Visitation of the See of Bath and Wells of 3 June 1634 says John Whitmarsh and his wife Alice, William Reade and his wife Susanna, and Richard Adams were presented as "recusants," or Puritans. [3]

John Whitmarsh, 39, his wife Alice, 35, and their children James, 11, Jane, seven, Ouseph (or Onseph), five, and Richard, two, enrolled as passengers for New England on the Marygould in Weymouth on 20 March 1634/5. [2][3][4]

Children of John Whitmarsh and his unknown first wife:

i. Alice Whitmarsh was born by 1623. She was buried in Shepton Mallett on 12 January 1623/4. [3]

Children of John Whitmarsh and Alice Garment:

ii. John Whitmarsh was baptized on 7 March 1623/4 in Shepton Mallet. [3] He died between 22 May 1695 and 15 December 1707. He married Sarah, the daughter of John Harding about 1654. [2][3]

John was a housewright. [2] He was a soldier in King Philip's War. [2]

John made his will on 22 May 1695; it was proved on 15 December 1709. He mentioned his sons John, Ebenezer, Zachariah, and Ezra; his daughters Sarah, Mary, Deborah, Judith Shaw, and Ruth; his grandchildren Joseph Petty, John Bates, and Richard Whitmarsh. [2]

iii. Jane Whitmarsh was born about 1627. She went to New England with her family but there is no further record. [3]

iv. Onesiphorus Whitmarsh was baptized on 17 January 1629/30 in Shepton Mallett. [3] He was living in 1643 in Weymouth. [3] There is no further record. [3]

v. Richard Whitmarsh was born about 1632. He was living in 1643 in Weymouth. [3] There is no further record. [3]

vi. Nicholas Whitmarsh was born say 1635. He married Hannah Reed.

vii. Simon Whitmarsh was born say 1637. He married first Sarah Holbrook, the daughter of Captain John and Elizabeth (Stream) Holbrook. [2] He is said to have married second Elizabeth Bicknell, the daughter of John and Mary (Porter) Bicknell, was born on 29 April 1673 in Weymouth. [2] Anderson argues that the identity of Simon's second wife is unknown. [3]
