JAMES BUTLER (d. 1681)
MARY UNKNOWN (d. aft 1720)
James Butler, Sr. "Irishman" died on 20 March 1681 in Billerica, Middlesex Count, Massachusetts. [1][2]
Mary died after 8 March 1719/20. The widow Mary Butler married John Hinds on 9 February 1681/2 in Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [3, 321][4] He died in March 1720. [5]
Inventory was taken on James's estate in 1681 in Nashaway (Lancaster). [6] His son James Butler of Nashaway alias Lancaster and his mother, the administrator of James's estate, petitioned the court to settle his estate on 10 April 1702. [7]
A record of the estates of the first inhabitants of Lancaster—used for dividing the land—shows that James was one of the poorest inhabitants, with an estate of only 50 pounds. James Butler received the 39th lot in the second division of meadow on 5 February 1659 in Lancaster. He was given a half a home lot, ten acres of upland for half a home lot and another 20 acres of upland for half a home lot on 2 (12) 1663 in Lancaster. He was given enough land to make a fence along the seven acres that he bought from goodman Joslin on 26 (9) 1664 in Lancaster. [3]
John Hinds came from Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and had been married before. [3] He later moved to Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [3] He sold his home lot to his son John on 13 April 1719 and returned to Lancaster. [5]
The widow Mary Hinds sold land to her son John Hinds of Brookfield on 8 March 1719/20. [4]
