ROBERT WHITCOMB (bp. 1629–by 1697), son of John Whitcomb and Frances Cogan

MARY CUDWORTH (bp. 1637–by 1682), daughter of General James Cudworth and Mary Parker

Robert, the son of John and Frances (Cogan) Whitcomb, was baptized on 20 December 1629 in St. James, Taunton, county Somerset, England. [1][2] He died by 18 January 1696/7. He married first Mary Cudworth, the daughter of General James Cudworth, in 1659 and on 9 March 1660/1 (see below). [1] He married second Mary Unknown.

Mary, the daughter of James Cudworth and Mary Parker, was baptized on 23 July 1637 in Scituate. [3] She probably died before her father made his will in 1682.

Robert and Mary were married in 1659 in Rhode Island by a Quaker preacher. [4] The Plymouth County records state, "Robert Whitcomb and Mary Cudworth for disorderly coming together without consent of parents and lawful marriage, is sentenced to pay ten pounds fine and imprisoned during the pleasure of the court, and being desirous to be orderly married were this 9th of March 1660[/1]." [1]

In 1663 and 1695 the town of Scituate laid out land to Robert in the right of his father John Whitcomb, deceased. [1]

In his will of spring 1682, James Cudworth left bequests to "my daughter Marye's four children Israel Whetcomme, Robert, James and Mary," all described as under 21. [3]

Inventory on the estate of Robert Whitcomb was taken on 18 January 1696/7. Mary Whitcomb, widow, and Israel Whitcomb (eldest?) son of Robert Whitcomb made oath that the inventory was true and posted bond on the estate of Robert Whitcomb on 2 February 1696/7. [5]

Children of Robert Whitcomb and Mary Cudworth:

i. Israel Whitcomb was born about 1661. [4] He married Mary Stodder on 28 May 1700 in Hingham. [4][6] Mary, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Gill) Stodder and granddaughter of John Stodder and Thomas and Hannah (Otis) Gill, was born on 30 August 1762. [7]

On 13 January 1704/5 Israel Whitcomb of Scituate sold to Job Otis land in Scituate that belonged to his deceased father Robert, late of Scituate, excepting "my mother-in-law [i.e., stepmother] Whitcombs right of thirds."

On 20 January 1704/5 Israel Whitcomb, James Whitcomb and Joseph Parker and wife Mary, all of Scituate, sold to Job Otis of Scituate, ten acres of Cohasset land. [8]

Israel lived on his father's residence in Scituate. [9]

ii. Robert Whitcomb was born about 1663. [4] He died on 25 December 1704 in Scituate. [4] He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Lieutenant Isaac Buck. She married second Daniel Lincoln of Hingham in January 1710/1. [4]

Elizabeth, the wife of Robert Whitcomb and the daughter of Lieutenant Isaac Buck, received a parcel of salt marsh in the 11 March 1696/7 division of Isaac's estate. [10]

Elizabeth Whitcomb was administratrix of the estate of her husband, Robert Whitcomb, late of Scituate on 18 June (?) 1707. [5]

iii. James Whitcomb was born about 1668. He died on 26 June 1728 in Rochester. He married Mary Parker.

iv. Mary Whitcomb married Joseph Parker, the brother of her sister-in-law Mary Parker. [8]

On 3 February 1706/7 Joseph Parker of Scituate and Mary his wife executed an instrument referring to their father Robert Whitcomb of Scituate, deceased, and their brother Israel Whitcomb. [8]
