APELLES SLOCUM, son of CAPTAIN SIMON SLOCUM and ABIGAIL METCALF

Apelles, the son of Lieutenant Simon and Abigail (Metcalf) Slocum, was born on 10 June 1756 in Wrentham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.1 He was baptised on 29 September 1756 in the First Congregational Church in Franklin.2 He married Deborah Coleman.3

Apelles was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and he was promoted to lieutenant.3

Apelles and Deborah lived on a farm in Templeton and Apelles was a carpenter and a joiner.3

Apelles and Deborah moved to Vermont, probably near Woodstock.3

Children of Apelles Slocum and Deborah Coleman:

i. Simon Slocum was born on 10 October 1775 in Templeton.4 He died on 31 January 1851, age 75, near Jackson Township.2,4 He married Mary, the daughter of Edward Cleveland, in 1805. She was born on 29 August 1787.5 She died on 16 June 1859 near Jackson Township.3 Simon and Mary are buried in the East Jackson Cemetery in Jackson.5

Simon and Mary moved to Pennsylvania and in 1819 they settled in the eastern part of Jackson Township in Susquehanna County.3

According to the census, in 1850 Simon, a 64[!]-year-old farmer born in Massachusetts, and Polly, 63 years old and born in Vermont, were living in Jackson.6

Simon was a carpenter and joiner like his father and in later life he was a farmer.3

ii. Apelles Slocum was born on 15 September 1777(?) in Templeton.4

iii. Alanson (Elenson) Slocum was born on 15 June 1782 in Templeton.4

iv. Jeremy Slocum was born on 17 October 1780 in Templeton. He was baptized there on 29 October 1786. He died on 7 October 1742. He married Sarah Whitcomb.

v. Otis Slocum was baptized on 29 October 1786 in Templeton.4 He married first Sarah Switzer.3 He married second the widow Roberts.3

Otis moved to Pomfret, Windsor County, Vermont and then to Jackson Townsuip. He later moved back to Pomfret.3

vi. Rebecca Slocum was baptized on 27 June 1784 in Templeton.4 She died on 21 August 1858 in Hyde Park, Vermont.3 She married as his second wife Benjamin, the son of Edward Cleveland.3 He died on 9 May 1859 in Hyde Park.3 He married first Rebecca Bruce.3

vii. Apelles Slocum was baptized on 6 September 1789 in Templeton.4

Apelles lived in Sharon, Vermont.3

viii. Polly [Mary] Slocum was baptized on 29 September 1793 in Templeton.4 She married Unknown Burnet.3

ix. Captain Nelson Slocum was baptized on 4 September 1796 in Templeton.4 He died on 22 January 1861 in Morrisville, Vermont.7 He married Lovicia Goodell on 17 January 1822.7 Lovicia, the daughter of Nathaniel and ___ (Warren) Goodell, was born in 1800 and died on 28 May 1889.7

He settled in Morrisville, Vermont.3
